Description: 'Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center' established bell hooks as one of international feminism's most challenging and influential voices.

Now, South End Press makes this invaluable work available in an attractive edition with a new preface by hooks, reflecting on the book's impact and the development of her ideas since it was first published.

In this beautifully written and carefully argued work, hooks maintains that mainstream feminism's reliance on white, middle-class, and professional spokeswomen obscures the involvement, leadership, and centrality of women of color and poor women in the movement for women's liberation.

Feminism's goal of seeking credibility and acceptance on already existing ground - rather than demanding the lasting and more fundamental transformation of society - has shortchanged the movement, hooks argues.

A sweeping examination of the core issues of sexual politics, 'Feminist Theory' argues that contemporary feminists must acknowledge the full complexity and diversity of women's experience to create a mass movement to end women's oppression.

bell hooks is the author of numerous critically acclaimed and influential books on the politics of race, gender, class, and culture. She is in high demand as a speaker internationally. Her first book, 'Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism', was named one of the "twenty most influential women's books of the last twenty years" by Publishers Weekly in 1992. Hooks has published several other books including 'Sisters of the Yam', 'Black Looks', 'Yearning', 'Talking Back', and 'Breaking Bread' (with Cornel West). She is currently Professor of English at City College, City University of New York.

The new edition of 'Feminist Theory' is volume 5 in the South End Press Classics series, edited by Manning Marable.
